Printmaking is the term for the use of a range of media to be able to create multiple images, or multiples. Monotyping is a form of printmaking made by drawing or painting on a smooth, non-absorbent surface. The surface, or matrix, was historically a copper etching plate, but in modern work it can range from zinc or glass to acrylic glass. The image will then be transferred right onto a piece of paper by pressing the two together, usually using a printing-press. Monotypes can also be made by inking an entire surface area and then, using brushes or cloths, eliminating ink to be able to create a subtractive image, e.g. creating lights right from a field of opaque color. The inks used may be oil-based or water-based. With oil-based inks, the paper might be dry, whereby the image has much more contrast, or the paper may be damp, in which case the graphic has a 10% greater array of tones. Continue reading →
